Quick tip series: Stunning effects with SHUTTER SPEED

Shutter speed like aperture affects the exposure of a photography. But when it comes to creativity you can do more with your shutter speed compared to the Aperture. Before I continue let me first differentiate the difference between the 2 when it comes to effects. Aperture affects the Depth of field,
the range over which objects are acceptably sharp while Shutter speed affects the way a motion looks, meaning you can either freeze your subject or blur your subject in motion with the use of shutter speed.

The following are the 4 basic effects you can do by manipulating shutter speed.

1. Freeze motion. In order to do this you can either use Manual mode (for advance photographers) or Shutter priority mode ( TV for Canon, S for Nikon). Set your shutter speed to 1/125 or faster.

2. Blur motion. In order to do this you can either use Manual mode (for advance photographers) or Shutter priority mode ( TV for Canon, S for Nikon). Set your speed to 1/10 or slower. It is recommended that you use a tripod when doing this effect to prevent total blurring of the whole image.

3. Panning. Panning is capturing the subject in horizontal motion.  To do this technique you must keep the subject ( which is moving horizontally) in the same position of the frame, for the duration of the exposure.  In order to do this you can either use Manual mode (for advance photographers) or Shutter priority mode ( TV for Canon, S for Nikon). The recommended setting for your shutter speed is around 1/50 and use  tripod/monopod for best results.

Note that panning is not easy to do so you need a lot of patience and experiment a lot until you get the effect you want.

4. Zoom burst. To achieve this technique you must have a zoom lens, any range will do. You must also set your shutter speed to something slow like 1/2 or 1 sec using either Manual or Shutter priority mode.  Then focus on your subject and as you press the shutter button  twist your zoom lens, the twisting of the lens should be done within the time the shutter is open. Please note that this will not work for automatic zoom and use tripod for better results.
